Extension Faculty Orientation Modules:
History & Philosophy of the Land-Grant System
The Land-Grant System has played a vital educational role since its beginning in 1862. The initial premise behind the Land-Grant System was to provide education to the common man in the areas of agriculture and the mechanical arts. At its inception, people had few choices for education in these areas, so Land-Grant colleges were established to create educational opportunities in fields other than religion, law and the liberal arts.
Since their establishment, Land-Grants have evolved and advanced into university systems covering a vast array of subjects and disciplines. Despite the changes, agricultural sciences and the mechanical arts are still an integral part of the Land-Grant University System.
