Extension Faculty Orientation Modules:
History & Philosophy of Cooperative Extension

Extension has had a very storied past that has been influenced by social, cultural and economic concerns and issues since its infancy in the early 1900s. Nevertheless, Extension's foundational philosophy and values have held intact throughout all this time, and these lie in the belief of people and the potential of education.

This module is designed to provide an overview of the Cooperative Extension System including its beginning, its philosophy, and its evolution throughout the years. The information in this module will enable you to understand:

  • What Cooperative Extension is
  • What led to the creation and development of Cooperative Extension
  • Cooperative Extension's philosophy, values and mission, and how these have continued to provide focus and direction through today
