MEMORANDUM

| RE: | Extension Four-Year Planning Effort |
This is an exciting and challenging time! Beginning January 1, 2000, Extension will begin implementation of a new Long Range Program, one that will cover the years 2000-2003. We have the opportunity to enter a brand new century with one of the strongest and most dynamic Extension programs in the country, one that will make significant impact in addressing the critical needs and issues affecting the people of Florida. With our outstanding faculty and staff, our capable and dedicated volunteer leaders, and our strong customer support we know that we can meet this challenge!
As some of you are aware, I have appointed a Long Range Planning Steering Committee to help guide the planning process. The committee has met, and with the input of a number of you has developed a multi-stage planning scenario that will culminate at the end of this year with the 2000-2003 Extension Long Range Plan. This planning scenario is presented on the attached sheet. The scenario specifies the various stages and critical dates of the process, the involvement of county and state faculty, and the informational support that will be provided to the counties in their work with advisory committees and other groups.
The Extension long range planning effort complements the Florida FIRST IFAS wide planning effort. We hope to utilize much of the Florida FIRST material as we build a vibrant four-year Extension program plan.
As you will note from the planning scenario, the immediate task is to prepare and distribute to the counties situational information that will backstop the January 27, 1999 planning effort. This is being developed by our state specialists at this time. Included will be current census data, trend information, information on major problems and issues affecting Florida, updated state major program data, and summaries of the Florida FIRST "white papers".
I particularly want to call the county faculty's attention to two other stages of the planning scenario. April and May are identified as the time to work with county advisory committees, county government, and other key groups in the identification of high priority issues, needs, and problems. County faculty will want to begin now in preparation for this important activity. And, in late May and June our administrative team will be meeting around the state on a district basis, as we have in the past, to hear from and discuss with our County Directors the programmatic priorities that each of our counties have identified.
Again, I look forward to our planning effort as we prepare to enter a new century of service to the people of Florida. We will be in continuing communication with you throughout this process. The latest information will be posted on the Extension Administration Web Site.
Thank you for your outstanding work and dedication to getting this important job accomplished!
